iron man

good to see some of the more interesting comic book films coming out with people who can actually act in them.

***edit*** video has been removed from daily motion. seems silly, why would you not want massive amounts of free publicity?

yes yes and thrice yes

the quality is terrible but you get the drift.

one a day

been feeling slightly demotivated recently so thought id set myself some targets. was thinking id try and do so many things a day, a week etc. and to that end i've just found the project 365 flickr group that challenges people in the group to take a picture everyday for an entire year. sounds interesting and would make an interesting project to look back on.

may give it a shot.

itunes single of the week

this weeks free itunes single is another in the every increasing line of talented female soloists for uh-merica. this one is a little more off the wall than rosie thomas, although both have a link to sufjan stevens, or feist however but is equally as good in her own way. definitely going to check out the album.

we cant turn them away

iraqi workers who have aided the uk forces are being abandoned by the forces as they withdraw. translators contractors and other workers who have supported the army are being targeted for violence by elements within iraq.

a campaign has begun to urge the british government to offer asylum to any worker who has aided the forces and now fears for their life.

whatever your moral judgement on the war we can not abandon these people.

"They are obligated to us. They said that they came to help us. What kind of help are they giving me now? They say they would protect us. What kind of protection are they giving me now? They say they came to give me freedom. I lost everything. They are obligated." - channel 4

"They knew my name and I got a call on my mobile phone, and was told to leave my job or lose my head, I'm still scared they're going to come for me, they can come at any time." - the independent

Issa Jafer al-Said, 25, who graduated from Basra University with a degree in English literature before working with the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, said: “We never imagined that the British could treat us like this. We face a very bleak future.”

the eco-pak

waitrose is to begin trials of the calon wen eco pak. the eco pak is a container for milk that replaces the terrible tetra-pak system. it consists of a reuseable jug and a plastic bag that the milk is bought in. a demonstration is available here.

fantastic idea and as usual, so so simple!

during a recent show at the norva in virginia morrissey made the following comment about madonna after she recently wore a fur coat

"I wouldn't be surprised if she [madonna] made that african boy into a coat and wore him ... for 15 minutes, and then threw it away."

go mozza!!

prince cd

6music today reported that the giveaway of prince's album in the mail on sunday today is set to make him MORE money than he would have got had the album been released normally.

(cant find the story on the site but it was in the music news during stephen merchants show)

just found out about this on the apple trailers site. its the trailer for a film produced by lost producer j.j. abrams. 01-18-08 is not the real name of the film but the release date. its currently being produced under the code name cloverfield. lost may have become over long and ridiculous but abrams use of the internet and viral marketings is second to none. most importantly though it looks rad!

it has already spawned fan blogs (1-18-08, we were the cool kids and project cloverfield) and the sparse official site is at 1-18-08.com

how someone found this out im not sure and if it works i dont know but im going to give it a listen.

damon and jamie's excellent journey

i have just watched the edition of bbc's imagine that follows the making of damon albarn and jamie hewlett's new opera monkey: journey to the west.

its incredible and damon albarn is a bone a fide genius.

it also features a lovely section that shows them using three of the rarest instruments in the world and then making their own out of horns and an arcade machine just for good measure.

can't say i've ever actually wanted to see an opera before.

some video is available here

my god's bigger than your god

an interesting post from rachel north on what is becoming one of my most read blogs.

"Okay readers. Here's some topical words from the Qu'ran, the Torah/Prophets/Old Testament and the New Testament.

Can you spot which quotation is from which book?

(a) ''... give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflicts-- these are they who are true (to themselves) and these are they who guard (against evil).''

(b) ''I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations,
To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness''

(c) ''The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed''

Interesting, hmmm? Right, here's three more...

(d) "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.''

(e) ''And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the [Sacred Place] until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers.

(f) ''You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you''.

Slightly trickier, I think. See if you are right - answers tomorrow.

Interesting fact: There are 44 matches for 'kill' in the Qu'ran, and 151 matches for 'mercy'
In the Bible, there are 124 matches for 'mercy' - and 421 matches for 'kill'."

think more and more people are beginning to realise that its not a question of which religion is right or wrong but that all religion is wrong. anything that constructs a belief system that is, in its own mind, infallible to criticism and logic can do no good.

christopher hitchens points out that the good that is done by religion is far outweighed by the evil and that the good that it does could be done by any decent human being but some of the evil could only be done by those who see themselves as on some divine mission.

critical metrics

critical metrics is a nice little site that pulls the most talked about songs from various mp3 sites and blogs and lists them along with samples and related videos.

current top 5:

1 “D.A.N.C.E.” - JUSTICE

2 The Heinrich Maneuver - INTERPOL

3 Boyz - M.I.A.

4 Elephant Gun - BEIRUT

5 Fluorescent Adolescent - ARCTIC MONKEYS

personally i recommend interpol

bush reaches new low

bush has over commuted the 30 month sentence of his pal "scooter" libby sighting that the sentence was too severe even though the maximum sentence could have been 25 years and a million dollar fine. this means that although the conviction stays on his record he wont have to go to jail.

libby was convicted for perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to investigators.
