mika brzezinski

us news presenter mika brezezinski refused to take the paris hilton being released from jail story as her lead. not done in the most articulate of ways but well done to her.

aaaaahhhhhhh bomb bomb bomb were all going to die

"LONDON (Reuters) - Police defused a bomb in an abandoned car in London's theatre district on Friday and launched a counter-terrorism investigation.

The bomb, which Sky News quoted unidentified sources as saying was "potentially massive", was found inside a light green Mercedes left outside a nightclub in the early hours of Friday, a police officer quoted witnesses as saying.

The witnesses said the occupant drove "erratically" before smashing into some bins outside the nightclub and running off. Bouncers from the nightclub investigated, saw what looked like gas canisters inside the vehicle and called the police.

Officers sealed off the area at around 2 a.m. and found a bomb, the Metropolitan police said.

"They discovered what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device. This was made safe," they said, adding that counter-terrorism officers were investigating."

key words here being "potential viable". so not actually a bomb then?! nice and convenient for brown two days in and he's already got an excuse to get some lovely controlling anti-terror legislation in.

stand up alarm clock

nice idea, an alarm clock in a mat. to turn it off simply stand on it.

from here normaliser

found this rather cool little web app called normaliser. it orders your top artists not by number of tracks listened too but instead by the amount of time listened. using tracks listened to skews the listing a bit as for example minor threat's complete discography comes in at 47.4 minutes and has 26 tracks. where as godspeed you black emperor!'s f# a# comes in at 60 mins but has but 3 tracks.

free audio books has an offer that allows you to get a free audio book for signing up to their 14 day trial. just grabbed myself hegemony or survival : america's quest for global dominance by noam chomsky. the books are locked by drm but you can apparently burn them to cd then rip them again to get rid of that, although i have not tried it yet.

this has entirely blown my mind

most things i come across on the internet are impressive but i can normally see how they are done. im not saying i could make them but i could explain the basic principle. this however has blown my mind, its just incredible!

the threat of stupid terrorists

just come across an interesting article by Bruce Schneier in which he argues that most of the recent terrorist threats have been blown out of proportion as there were mostly impossible to pull off or high unlikely to succeed. yet they are given blanket media coverage in the US and coverage in the UK.

this ties in with the book i've been listening (i've discovered audio books they are awesome) to Al Gore's The Assault on Reason, in which he outlines how debate has been removed from modern politics and that there is no argument based on fact on rhetoric and politics based on fear. so far its rather like my dissertation but obviously alot better written.

the london book project

a wonderful idea. this should happen wherever it is possible.

"The London Book Project is a free book exchange on a massive scale. Using the London Underground as a high speed distribution network, we aim to bring real literature to London's commuters. Scrap the freesheets - read a free book instead!

Over the next two weeks we'll be distributing thousands of second hand books across the tube and we want YOU to get involved. If you see one of our books, please pick it up! Then read it and replace with any book of your choice. Let's make the tube a giant, free library!"

presenting the london Z splodge /. Z olympics

the london 2012 olympic commitee today revealed their new logo and its god awful. the video that goes with it is nicely done and i think the idea is sound but the logo just doesnt work for me.

There is a also now a petition to change the logo here

**edit 2**
the logo/brand apparantly cost £400,000 and was designed by Wolff Ollins. (source - Metro Online)

big brother is bilge but this is genius

The big donor show has been revealed as a hoax. The show WAS actually a stunt to highlight the problem of organ donor shortage in the Netherlands. Fantastic!!

"A Dutch reality television show in which a supposedly dying woman had to pick one of three contestants to whom she would donate a kidney was revealed as an elaborate hoax on Friday.

The show, which the broadcaster had said aimed to focus attention on a shortage of donor organs in the Netherlands, was condemned by Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende before broadcast Friday night and sparked controversy worldwide.

Identified only as "Lisa," the 37-year-old woman who had been said to be suffering from a brain tumor was to base her selection on the person's history and conversations with the candidates' families and friends.

In the last minutes of the program, she was revealed as a healthy actress and producers stunned viewers by saying "The Big Donorshow" was a hoax.

The contestants were also part of the deception, although all three are genuine kidney patients.

"Their life is bitter reality," the host said after revealing the deception, just at the moment at which Lisa was to have stated her choice." from CNN
