taking liberties

Taking Liberties is a new film on a so far sadly limited release that explores New Labour's eroding of civil liberties after 9/11.

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." - Benjamin Franklin

nick griffin slips again

in a debate on newsnight last night nick griffin came out with the following bewildering statement. "The BBC and the Labour government have demonised the word racism".

DEMONISED RACISM?

He then went on to justify it by claiming it was a term invented by Trotsky to defame his enemies.

Yet another slip from his public image as a 'politician' and into his true colours as a idiotic racist.

environmental confusion

i try to be as environmental as i can. i turn lights and plugs off wherever i go. i try and buy recycled products and use organic food but thinking about things i've started to become a bit confused.

does my organic milk come from cows kept in tiny sheds?

is my fair trade chocolate that's probably air freighted in better than UK chocolate thats made from GM cocoa?

is my organic chicken free range?

is carbon offsetting really the answer? surely the damage has already been done? don't we just need to stop??

every product or service has a downside i guess its just about weighing up which i think is doing the greatest good.

light fields

found the amazing but scary phenomena of light fields. the fluorescent tubes are placed in the ground but are not connected to the pylons in any way they are powered purely from the waste energy.

the saddest fact i've heard for a long time

"there are now more households in britain that own two cars than two novels"

source - the human footprint

iraq in fragments

ive been aware of this film for a while but havn't seen any kind of release of it in the uk. imdb quotes its uk release as jan 2007 but i may have missed it but i dont think i did. very pleased to see it has now got a dvd release date.

lib dems call for general election

im 100% behind the lid dem's call for a general election. the people of britain elected tony blair on the proviso he would serve a full term. he's not so we deserve the right to choose again.

having watched the rather glib but still smug speech blair gave today its good to think well see the back of him fairly soon.

john butler trio - guitar solo

AMAZING!!

why im afraid of americans by tom sykes

rather interesting article by tom sykes, think he hits some nails pretty squarely. fear is a pretty good way to describe many peoples feelings towards america.

"as an immigrant to the united states--albeit a british, white, male, middle-class, and legal one--you need to watch what you say about your host country. especially in print. but after living here for a year, i've reached the stage where i can't keep quiet any longer. so here goes:

you guys scare me.

i mean, you really, really, really freak me out."

article is here

iConcertCal

just found this rather cool little app for itunes. its called iConcertCal. its a visualisation that shows up gigs within a radius of the town you put in based on the bands in your itunes library. nothing shows up for ipswich but thats probably just because its dead. london and norwich show up quite a bit

end of the season

place 14th | played 46 | points 62

13 points off the play-offs. think that with a bit of investment and holding on to as much of the squad as possible we've got a chance of putting in a challenge. now for the long football free summer :(

grindhouse posters

there's a nice selection of grindhouse style re-workings of existing films over at somethingawful.com. a few good ones below:

new snow patrol/spiderman 3

every review of spiderman 3 i've seen/heard isn't exactly glowing. what a shocker! (for those of you who weren't aware i think the first two are rubbish). this snow patrol video from the soundtrack is sublime though.

this american life

one of the best podcasts around, this american life this week featured an episode on guantanamo bay that was is scary as it is interesting. it features that rarest of things an interview with a detainee. one in particular who had been detained for something having a friend who was accused of being a suicide bomber years after he was actually captured and placed in the camp. this friend is alive and living in germany.

fascism in ten easy steps

meant to blog this a while ago but forgot till now. an excellent article on the guardian website by naomi wolf called fascist america in ten easy steps.

1. invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
2. create a gulag
3. develop a thug caste
4. set up an internal surveillance system
5. harass citizens' groups
6. engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. target key individuals
8. control the press
9. dissent equals treason
10. suspend the rule of law

of course they are all explained further in the article. very interesting read.
