the NEW iphone

nokia today released its answer to the iphone. if you cant beat them copy them!

itunes update

today apple launched tv shows on the uk itunes service, and again uk consumers get screwed.

episodes cost £1.89 compared to $1.99 in the u.s. which works out at about twice the price.

they may have shot themselves in the foot however as a quick internet search finds commander in chief, the only interesting show available at the moment, on dvd for £24.99 where as buying all episodes on itunes would total £35.91. not to mention the inferior quality of the itunes download.

also this week the free single is the brilliant bat for lashes.

iphone on o2 in the uk has reported that the iphone will appear in the uk on o2.

which is a shame.

if it was on t-mobile with its web'n'walk service id be highly tempted to buy one, especially if it appears near the end of my contract.

ft also reports that apple will get 10% of all calls and texts so expect the contract to be hefty!!

stop it! stop it NOW!!

if you don't have an original idea don't make a film!

from the register

"Warner Bros has announced it will remake 1973 Kung Fu classic Enter the Dragon, AP chillingly reports.

The rehash - cunningly entitled Awaken the Dragon - will be directed by The Shield's Kurt Sutter and will feature "an FBI agent who investigates a Shaolin monk and underground kung fu fight clubs", according to Warner Bros publicist Laura Kim."

why do people hate america?

from 1798 to the present hour, discounting the years of the american civil war, 1861-1865, there is only one year, 1892, that america has not invaded or been in the process of invading another country.

"Construction of a £4.4m wind farm in Oxfordshire, financed by the community, is scheduled to start after 15 years of planning and design delays.

The electricity - enough to light up 2,500 homes for 25 years - will be sold to a local power company.

The farm is to be located at Watchfield on the Oxfordshire and Wiltshire border, at the site of an old airfield.

The money was put up by 2,394 people who formed the Westmill Wind Farm Co-op to manage the business.

its safe to go back in the water

from media guardian:

"A photograph appearing to confirm that a great white shark was lurking in waters just off Britain was today exposed as a fake.

The man who took the picture, which was featured prominently in the Sun, admitted he had snapped the creature during a fishing trip in South Africa rather than off Newquay, northern Cornwall.

"I took the picture while I was on a fishing trip in Cape Town and just sent it in as a joke," Kevin Keeble told the Newquay Voice newspaper. "I didn't expect anyone to take be daft enough to take it seriously."

update to last article - Lhadon and Paul have been detained

Lhadon and Paul have been detained: "

SFT staff: We recorded this video from a live skype videoconference with Paul and Lhadon at an Internet cafe about a day ago. They thought at the time they were going to be picked up by one of the thirty ‘minders’ (aka plain clothes security agents) outside. They were able to return Tuesday evening to their hotel without incident.

Unfortunately, at about 2pm on Wednesday in Beijing, Lhadon and Paul (who has been accompanying her during this trip), were picked up by uniformed Chinese police and taken for questioning to a local police station. At this point, we haven’t heard from them since a text message sent by Lhadon confirmed this shortly after their detainment.

Please keep Paul and Lhadon and the other Tibet activists detained in Beijing - Sam, Mel, Leslie, Nupur, Duane, and Pete - in your thoughts, and continue to spread the word about this blog.

Hong Kong - On the day of the one-year countdown to the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Lhadon Tethong, a prominent Tibetan independence activist and the Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet, was detained in Beijing. Ms. Tethong was picked up by Chinese authorities together with her colleague Paul Golding, a long-time advocate of Tibetan freedom, and taken to a Beijing police station.

For the past seven days, Ms. Tethong, a Tibetan-Canadian, has been traveling in Beijing, openly blogging at to expose the reality behind China’s propaganda campaign surrounding the Olympic Games. She and Mr. Golding have been under heavy scrutiny from Chinese authorities, followed at all times by several vehicles as well as plainclothes security officers on foot. This number increased to 30 plainclothes followers after a protest by six activists from Students for a Free Tibet yesterday on China’s Great Wall.

‘At the very moment that China is proclaiming Olympic ideals of peace and humanity, it has turned around and silenced Ms. Tethong and Mr. Golding for nothing more than freely expressing their views on the Beijing Olympics and Tibet,’ said Tenzin Dorjee, Deputy Director of Students for a Free Tibet. ‘The Chinese government’s detention of these observers during the one-year countdown exposes the blatant propaganda behind China’s efforts to promote an image of itself as a free and open society.’

Tethong and Golding’s abrupt detention comes just hours before tens of thousands of people, including national Olympic Association delegates and members of the International Olympic Committee, are gathering in Tiananmen Square for the official countdown celebration. Chinese authorities have not responded to requests by relevant embassies of the six Tibet activists detained on Tuesday for unfurling a 450-square foot banner reading ‘One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008″ in English and Chinese. The whereabouts of the six activists are still unknown.

Tibetans and supporters around the world – from New Delhi to Rome to Ottawa to New York – are holding protests today to mark the countdown, calling on China for a resolution to its occupation of Tibet by August 2008.

zimbabwe: mugabe enacts law to spy on phones, 'net, mail

from boing boing

"In the southern African nation of Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe has enacted a law granting state security agents full authority to surveil landline and mobile phones, postal mail and what little internet is available anyway, according to a government notice published on Friday.

The move comes as economic and state structures in the world's fastest shrinking economy approach the point of absolute collapse"

kanye west teams up with takashi murakami

from guardian media

"Grammy-winning hip hop star Kanye West is to collaborate with Takashi Murakami, the "Warhol of Japan", on a series of projects for West's forthcoming third album Graduation, released on September 11.

According to West, who met Murakami in his studio while on a recent visit to Japan and called him a "God in the art world", Murakami will create all the artwork for the album singles, including the songs Can't Tell Me Nothing and Stronger. Murakami has also created a three-minute animation for one of the songs, along with artwork for the album merchandising. "Murakami's work is stunning," says West."
